How the day unfolded

The ceremony began at 5:00 PM with the ribbon cutting by the Mayor of Aveiro. It was followed by entertainment from host Tópê Carvalho, the Portuguese anthem by soprano Mónica Pais with Francesca Serafini on piano, and the unveiling of the Mega Portuguese Flag. Mayor Luís Souto Miranda addressed the crowd before kick-off.

At 6:00 PM the giant screen lit up for Portugal × DR Congo and Largo do Rossio turned into a sea of scarves, flags and chanting. Between celebrations, fire on stage and packed stands, opening night showed exactly what the Fan Zone will be throughout the World Cup.
